Mechanism of Action

Prolonged androgen treatment is necessary to maintain sexual characteristics in males who develop testosterone deficiency post-puberty. It may also stimulate puberty in selected males with delayed puberty not caused by a pathological disorder. Prior to treatment, potential adverse effects on bone maturation should be discussed, and bone age assessments should be conducted every six months.

Females: Testosterone Enanthate by Beligas may be utilized in women with inoperable metastatic breast cancer who are 1 to 5 years postmenopausal, primarily to ablate ovarian function. Other methods to counteract estrogen activity include adrenalectomy, hypophysectomy, and antiestrogen therapy. This treatment may also be considered for premenopausal women with hormone-responsive tumors who have benefited from oophorectomy. Decisions regarding androgen therapy should be made by an experienced oncologist. Additionally, it has been used to manage postpartum breast pain and engorgement.

Contraindications

Testosterone Enanthate by Beligas is contraindicated in men with breast carcinomas or known/suspected prostate carcinomas, and in women who are or may become pregnant. Administration during pregnancy can lead to virilization of the female fetus, including clitoromegaly and abnormal genital development. The risk of masculinization is dose-dependent and highest during the first trimester. If pregnancy occurs while on this medication, the patient should be informed of potential risks to the fetus.

Side Effects
