Mechanism of action
Cabergoline is a long‑acting ergot‑derived dopamine‑2 (D₂) receptor agonist. By stimulating D₂ receptors in the pituitary gland, it suppresses prolactin secretion from lactotroph cells, leading to a rapid and sustained reduction in serum prolactin levels.
Indications
Males: Treatment of hyperprolactinemia caused by pituitary adenomas, medication‑induced prolactin elevation, or idiopathic causes. Reducing prolactin can restore gonadal function, improve libido, and prevent gynecomastia in men using anabolic‑androgenic steroids (AAS).Females: Management of hyperprolactinemic infertility, galactorrhea, and menstrual irregularities. Also used as adjunct therapy in prolactin‑secreting pituitary tumors (prolactinomas) to shrink tumor size and normalize prolactin.
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to cabergoline or any ergot derivatives.
